There are more than 60 different types of adenoviruses that can cause disease in humans. The clinical picture is not the same for every infected person, there is a big difference, this occurs within the tissue where the adenovirus originated per type of adenovirus. The adenovirus often causes little to no complaints, if complaints arise these often include mild complaints such as respiratory complaints, intestinal complaints and eye inflammation.
Adenovirus is a virus with a double-stranded DNA genome. The discovery of so many different types of adenoviruses has divided it into 7 subgroups, named A through G. In rare cases, the adenovirus can lead to serious illnesses such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) or pneumonia. In case these symptoms occur, there is adenovirus subtypes B, C and E. Subtypes A, B, C, D and G are respiratory and subtypes E and F are gastrointestinal. All 7 subtypes can be diagnosed with the PCR kit.
