To diagnose a CMV infection, an IgM and IgG determination is performed. This is mainly performed for the diagnosis of a recent primo-CMV infection in an immunocompetent person. The sensitivity of the IgM determination is high in the acute phase and the specificity depends on the test used. Diagnosis of a BK virus is based on the quantitative detection of viral DNA in urine, plasma or other material. BK virus DNA material has been found in the tumors of human brain, pancreatic islets and urinary tract. T-Ag is the antigen encoding tumor antigen and it can bind to the tumor suppressor protein P53. A week after infection, specific IgM and IgG are detectable. In this phase, symptoms such as exanthema and joint complaints occur, these symptoms can last for a few days to 2 weeks. With the VZV PCR kit, both an acute infection can be detected, but also an infection that has already occurred before, an indirect infection. The presence of virus-specific IgG antibodies in the serum indicates a past infection. In most cases, VZV leading to chickenpox and/or shingles is a clinical or visual diagnosis.
