MTHFR stands for methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase and A1298C means that a mutation has been found at gene number 1298 where nucleotide A is changed to nucleotide C. The MTHFR enzyme is important for folic acid metabolism, which is an integral process for cell metabolism in DNA, RNA and protein methylation . The A1298C mutation caused severe migraines.

The MTHFR A1298C polymorphism reduces the enzymatic activity of MTHFR C677. This mutation does not increase homocysteine levels associated with C677
