Bacterial and fungal co-infections with COVID-19

Molecular diagnostics are more important than ever for early diagnosis, informed antibiotic therapy, infection control and antibiotic resistance surveillance. An early diagnosis of bacterial and fungal infections limits the COVID-19 deaths by treating patients with the appropriate antibiotic treatment. A study (In Zhou et al, Lancet March 2020) shows that 27/28 patients with an identified co-infections with COVID-19 died. Co-infections are suspected to be under evaluated due to systemically administered antibiotics and due tot the fact that culture is the main diagnostic test performed. Blood culture is known to be imperfect, up to 50% infections are not detected by blood culture determination.
