Analysis is by fragment analysis, with expansions detected in the range of 100 to 500 base pairs. A triplet-repeat primed PCR (TP-PCR) system is included for SCA2 and SCA7, where conventional PCR can miss an expansion. One kit covers 12 reactions. Research use only.

Clinical background
Cerebellar ataxias are neurodegenerative disorders with progressive loss of coordination and balance. Because several genes can be involved and the clinical picture overlaps, the repeat size determines which form is present, which is what makes it relevant for differential diagnosis, for following symptoms and for genetic counselling.

The kit covers SCA1, SCA2, SCA3, SCA6, SCA7, SCA12, SCA17 and DRPLA, and detects expansions in the range of 100 to 500 base pairs by fragment analysis.
TP-PCR
Alongside conventional PCR the kit includes a triplet-repeat primed PCR system, aimed at expansions in SCA2 and SCA7 that conventional PCR can fail to detect.
