HSV stands for Herpes Simplex Virus and these are double-stranded DNA viruses belonging to the herpes virus family. Known infections caused by the HSV virus are cold sores and genital herpes. If there is an infection of HSV type 1, it is an infection of the ganglion of the trigeminal nerve. HSV type 2 infection is an infection in which the virus resides in the sacral ganglia.

HSV virus type 1 and type 2 are closely related and show the same genome structure. It is recommended to detect HSV by PCR diagnosis. This technique is recommended as a diagnostic tool for genital herpes and for examination of CSF when HSV meningitis is suspected. A qualitative diagnosis of HSV is important because HSV is one of the most common viruses worldwide that causes infections. HSV is detected by PCR by taking a swab from the host from CSF, plasma and urine. HSV glycoprotein B is a viral glycoprotein involved in the viral cell importation of HSV, this gene is used as a target sequence for detection of HSV. Glycoprotien B mainly acts as a fusion protein, ie this protein is required for viral entry into the cell.
