Varicella-Zoster

The Varicella-Zoster virus is responsible for causing both chickenpox in children and shingles in adults. While chickenpox is generally a mild illness, shingles can be considerably more painful and has the potential for long-lasting complications, such as postherpetic neuralgia. Accurate and timely diagnosis, often via molecular methods like PCR, is crucial for effective management and isolation protocols. These diagnostic measures are especially important in immunocompromised patients, where the virus can cause severe complications. Detecting the Varicella-Zoster virus allows healthcare providers to prescribe antiviral medication and other supportive treatments to alleviate symptoms and prevent spread.
