Epstein–Barr Virus (EBV) PCR Kit

About Epstein–Barr Virus (EBV) PCR Kit

The TRUPCR® Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) Detection Kit is a Real-Time PCR assay developed for the qualitative identification of EBV DNA in clinical samples. Epstein–Barr virus (EBV), also known as Human Herpesvirus 4 (HHV-4), is a highly prevalent herpesvirus associated with infectious mononucleosis and linked to multiple lymphoproliferative disorders, including Burkitt’s lymphoma and Hodgkin’s disease. The TRUPCR® EBV Detection Kit utilizes a dual-target design, offering enhanced sensitivity down to 100 IU/ml and reliable internal control to prevent false negatives. This assay simplifies the workflow for diagnostic labs, integrating ready-to-use reagents, straightforward setup, and compatibility with widely used real-time PCR instruments. Suitable for use in transplant monitoring, oncology, and infectious disease diagnostics, this kit is a crucial tool for detecting and managing EBV-associated conditions.

What is in the Epstein–Barr Virus (EBV) Panel?

The TRUPCR® Epstein–Barr Virus (EBV) Detection Kit contains all the required components to perform a robust and highly sensitive PCR-based assay. It includes forward and reverse primers targeting conserved EBV DNA sequences, Taq DNA polymerase, internal control reagents, and fluorescent probes for real-time amplification tracking. Detection is performed via the FAM channel for EBV and the Texas Red channel for the internal control, allowing simultaneous monitoring of target DNA and PCR integrity in each reaction.

Role of Epstein–Barr Virus (EBV) in Disease

Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) infects over 90% of the global population and persists latently within B lymphocytes. While many infections are asymptomatic, EBV is the primary cause of infectious mononucleosis, commonly known as glandular fever. In immunocompromised individuals, especially organ transplant or bone marrow recipients, reactivation of EBV can lead to serious conditions such as post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD). EBV has also been associated with several malignancies, including:

  • Burkitt’s lymphoma
  • Hodgkin’s lymphoma
  • Nasopharyngeal carcinoma
  • AIDS-related CNS lymphoma

Given these associations, EBV-positive status in vulnerable populations necessitates careful monitoring and early intervention. Molecular detection of EBV is a cornerstone for managing patient outcomes.

About the TRUPCR® EBV Detection Kit

The TRUPCR® EBV Detection Kit is designed for rapid, sensitive, and specific detection of EBV DNA in a variety of clinical samples. The test provides high accuracy by employing dual-target amplification and a robust internal control, ensuring reliability even in complex clinical matrices. This assay reduces the risk of false negatives due to PCR inhibitors and simplifies laboratory workflows with minimal manual steps. All reagents are provided in a ready-to-use format, minimizing setup time and user error.

Principle and Workflow

The detection of EBV DNA is achieved using real-time PCR with dual-channel fluorescence detection:

  1. Extract DNA from clinical samples using standard nucleic acid extraction kits.
  2. Prepare the PCR reaction using the included reagents.
  3. Load the reaction onto compatible real-time PCR systems.
  4. Monitor amplification in real-time:
    • EBV target in the FAM channel
    • Internal control in the Texas Red channel

The built-in endogenous control confirms both nucleic acid extraction quality and amplification efficiency, ensuring accurate interpretation of results.

Clinical Application

The TRUPCR® EBV Detection Kit is recommended for:

  • Diagnosis and confirmation of infectious mononucleosis
  • Screening for EBV reactivation in transplant patients
  • Monitoring EBV-positive status in oncology settings
  • Identifying EBV-associated complications in immunocompromised patients

Its fast turnaround and high specificity make it suitable for routine use in molecular diagnostics labs, especially in settings requiring timely decisions regarding immunosuppressive therapy.
